It’s truly incredible how much I’ve learned in such a short time. It’s becoming more and more natural and automatic to translate what I’ve learned from your tutorials into my paintings. You’re not only an amazing artist, but also an exceptional teacher and I’m deeply grateful for everything you share. Thank you for inspiring me! Congratulations to all the amazing artists! And thank you so much to this very special community ❤️
Not only has Jean helped me to paint more freely her lessons have helped with all my painting even detailed work. Jean is a truly inspiring teacher filling each lesson with joy while teaching paint control and a real understanding of the medium. She reminds us that the world is a beautiful place.
I so loved your free tutorial on the Sunflower. I actually created one of my own - my first ever 'totally mine' creation. Wish I could send it here. I would love your comments/critique. I'm 79 and started watercolor painting during covid. I am NOT and never considered myself an artist. But I'm so enjoying your videos! Thank you so much! Warmly, Ellie
Joining Jean’s on line school has been the wisest decision I have made in years. Although I am not a beginner, I was stuck in a rut, and Jean has liberated my full creative potential.
I am loving going through all her old tutorials to learn her unique techniques. In 3 months I know I have improved a lot, according to my friends 😊.
Thank you Jean for daring to be different taking us on this super exciting journey❤️
When I started painting, many moons ago - I worked only in watercolor. I had decided to try painting at the age of 42. I was told when in school art that I would never do well. But it was something I was always interested in and I love the fact that you are always learning. I painted in Watercolor only for about 20 years. Then I got interested in acrylics and oils and did not touch watercolor for about 10 years. About 5 years ago I started watercolor again but found I had to pretty much start over - relearning and having a graphic background found looseness really, really hard and I still do, but with Jean Haines it has certainly loosened up and I just enjoy and look forward to the new tutorials so much. It's taking awhile but I find my painting is changing and I love it. This is the best course I have ever taken. Love it Jean Haines and have already signed up for the second year. Carole
Jean Haines has managed to create a beautiful giving and caring art school, whose members are all looking out for each other.
Jeans videos are very easy to follow, offering many different subjects suitable for beginners as well as more experienced artists. Jean does not keep any secrets and shares all her tips in a very warm environment. I have learned a lot, and I mean a lot since I joined a bit over a year ago.
If you are undecisive, dont hesitate, just join, since I have not regretted it at all
I painted for pleasure. Not a great artist but adequate. Then I became extremely ill won the battle to live but lost my vision. I am completely blind in my left eye and I have extremely limited vision in my right. I have other deficits but my eyes were precious.
To paint I look through a magnification lens which is also an adjustable bright light. I spend at least 3 hours a day carefully painting and loving every single brush stroke.
I learned I didn't know much before (lol) and my technique was terrible - then I just started to paint. Not for anyone else but me.
My homecare nurse came on Monday and I was just about to do my second wash of the wonderful owl and to my amazement she said "I think that owl is staring at me".
What a wonderful comment and completely unsolicited. She said that she wanted to learn how to paint and commented that I must have been at it for years.
So how can I show how much it has meant to me? I am on my own everyday I rely on others to come to help me with so many every day things that I can no longer do however I can be anywhere in the world when I paint. I am totally consumed and I forget I can't see much of anything.
I am eternally grateful and in your debt. I just wish that I had the ability to share my work so I am not in the forum. Jean THANK YOU.
I love Jean and her pups and her painting. I don't always do the paintings but I love watching her paint just to see her and see her beautiful paintings. I'm learning so much watching her techniques. And I feel calm and happy after watching her paint. When I do paint and post it, the other members are so encouraging and Jean herself responds. The production value is top notch. Amazing artist, incredible value.
I am a relatively new artist, being at this for only five years. In this time, I've taken a ton of workshops and had individual instruction as well. By far, Jean's tutorials are at the top of my list of helpful, info-packed workshops.
Not all who can paint, can teach. Jean is one of the few who can. Even though I'm watching a tutorial, as opposed to having an interactive workshop, the amount of information given is incredible, and I feel as though she is in my art studio talking to me.
My style is evolving, and I'm growing as an artist, as a direct result of watching these tutorials. I am so thankful I happened upon Jean's Instagram! Her passion for watercolor, and for life, is inspirational. She makes me feel that I can do it! Her positive messages about painting help me see my failures as learning experiences.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart Jean. You are just what I needed on my art journey.

Years ago I discovered Jean's books and DVDs and I was deeply infected and inspired. the abstract looseness of her brushstrokes, the surprisingly modern, fresh, and unique color choice, the way how she shows the world and nature in her wonderful watercolors open a door inside me and I decided to follow her on her way. I had the amazing chance to take one of her workshops in England and must say, she's not only a worldwide known artist but the best watercolor teacher I know and a very kind and generous person. Perhaps spreading her joy is the greatest inspiration of all and the and it was one of my best decisions to participate in this school year! Not only did it advance my artistic development, but it also enriched me as a person. I'm happy and grateful.
Firstly thank you Jean for this amazing on line art school. One of the good things to have come out of such a turbulent year. A gift that keeps on giving.
I love everything about it. It’s like a breath of fresh air. I love the way Jean teaches. Her words of encouragement to ‘have a go’. Her passion and enthusiasm and warmth and kindness shine through as doEd her desire to share as many tips as possible. It really is like being in Jeans home. You can lose yourself immersed in watercolour for hours.
Jean is such an inspirational teacher and puts her heart and soul into being the best tutor.
For anybody thinking about joining. You won’t regret it.
I’ve only really started painting since lockdown, I’m doing at least one a day now & am really enjoying myself!
I love your style & find your tutorials so helpful. I’m a complete novice! But getting lots of praise for my attempts.
Thank you so much for all I’m learning & enjoying
You simply cannot escape Jean's infectious passion for watercolors. If you think you'll just be getting 2 tutorials a month, be warned! Jean will always keep you on your toes and gasping for breath, trying to catch up to her. She'll say otherwise but I'm pretty sure she gets more than 24 hours in a day. From roses to berries, pups to elephants you risk getting addicted to each and every subject.
Honestly, joining this online school was the best decision of my life. From rekindling my love for watercolors to encouraging me to paint with unrestrained enthusiasm and individuality. Words cannot express how much Jean and this school have given me. For all this and so much more, I will forever be grateful.
In the last couple of years, I became more interested in drawing and painting. I gave oil painting, dry pastel, watercolor and watercolor pencil a try and landed on watercolor eventually. Early on this year, when I finally decided to take watercolor more seriously, Jean's art school was about to launch. I joined as the initial batch of students and have been enjoying the online art school ever since. It is quite obvious that Jean and her team were trying their best to enrich the learning experience of the enrolled students by adding different useful and fun components like Jean's extra inspirational tips, members' get-to-know-each-other corner etc. I have been enjoying learning from Jean to paint in a loose style while searching for my own. Though I haven't met Jean in person, from the tutorials, comments, and books, she came across as very humble, supportive, humorous and inspirational, and more importantly, a fellow traveller helping students to grow as a watercolorist (and as a person really) than an expert artist merely teaching sophisticated skills or showing off. I would recommend anyone who fancy learning loose watercolour to join us on Jean's online art school.
I'm not sure if many people understand that most artist as brilliant as Jean Haines are not usually equally as brilliant as teachers. I'm not sure what is more inspirational - Jean's paintings or her teaching style. She knocks down all fears and encourages you to join in her joy. After painting her exercises you realize how much fun you are having and how much you are learning. This class has taught me years of skills in just a few months. Jean has also created a wonderful, positive online community full of artists that lift each other up and help one other on this painting journey. This is literally the best possible online class you could find. I've recommended Jean's school to several friends and all of them are as thrilled as I am with the quality and the depth of their experience.
If anyone is interested in improving their watercolor skills they NEED to sign up for Jean’s art school. Let me list some of what makes the school so fabulous:
1. Jean herself - she is kind, supportive, and so personable that it’s like she is in the room with you. And she is so herself that it makes the videos extra fun.
2. Tons of content - the videos are detailed, well filmed, and as Jean says in an intro, there are many techniques included without hitting you over the head with it. And let’s not forget that there are so many tips and instructions found in her posts to supplement the “official” lessons!
3. Freedom to play - I wind up copying Jean to learn the skills then do another piece that is my own. Jean’s dancing ladies gives me permission as well as a system to play with color, and the loose style helps a literal person like myself find my style even when using a reference photo. She has given me such a gift.
4. The supportive forum - I’m not the biggest poster, but when I do, people have been so kind and helpful. Also we get to see inspirational work from our fellow students which for me is sort of a second level of instruction
I could keep going on and on. I love the process and am ecstatic about the results I feel exceptionally lucky to be studying with Jean. :-)
I’m a relative beginner in watercolor. I’ve taken one of Jean’s classes in person (several years ago) and I was delighted to find her online school! She’s simply the best watercolor teacher I’ve ever experienced. I can barely keep up with all of the tutorials and tips. Jean’s online school is the best money I have ever spent on education! I highly recommend!!
I rekindled my love of painting at the start of 2020 and decided to join Jean’s online school to push myself and explore the boundless possibilities of watercolour.
Jean’s tutorials are practical and easy to follow along for all skill levels. I particularly love listening to Jean’s passion for the medium which has only inspired me to paint more!
The tutorials are my little escape from day to day life, a way to relax and unwind and learn new things.
Finding Jean helped me find my 'restart' button. After a long hiatus from painting I was petrified looking at a blank white sheet of paper. Jean has an approach that is not only tremendously fun but takes away all the fear of 'making a mistake'. She not only shares her wealth of knowledge generously and without hesitation, she does so with humor and grace. It is truly mind boggling to see and share our art with each other all over the world.
I am the 182nd reviewer that has rated Jean and her fabulous art school 5 stars!! It is a pretty rare thing these days for a 100% endorsement of anything, yet here is Jean absolutely nailing it! Watercolour enthusiasts from the UK, EU, US, Scandinavia, Canada, Argentina, Mexico, Hong Kong and Australia have been drawn to Jean, her extraordinarily generous tutelage, passionate encouragement, kindness and talent. Jean more than delivers in this course, bringing, joy, light and a kaleidoscope of colour that not only inspires experienced but emerging artists in our art-making journeys and a community that transcends borders. Many thanks Jean!!
I took up watercolour painting when I retired over ten years ago. I had never painted anything before and joined a local art group with a tutor whose style is very tight and precise. We produced many lovely detailed landscape paintings but now I have discovered Jean and her much, much looser style and am loving the freedom it brings. The effects Jean achieves with pigment and water is truly magical. I have a long way to go yet as it is so different in style, but I am so, so enjoying the journey. Thank you Jean.
Jean's water colour school is the art instruction I always dreamed about but thought impossible. She has the unique ability to bypass all the artistic clutter and fan that creative spark that is closest to your heart. To create with joy and passion. She incorporates all the basic painting techniques and fundamentals without using any jargon that has you scrambling for a dictionary. She manages to encourage each of us on our own personal journey as artists.
Our forum is an inclusive and supportive haven that is infinitely warm and friendly. As an artist there is nothing more I could ask for. Thank you Jean and all the wonderful voices that make this possible!
I am very new to watercolour, I first came across Jean at The Mall Galleries last year. Soft pastel is my medium of choice but I was inspired by Jean to try watercolour. I bought a couple of Jean’s books and watercolours to help me start my journey. I was then thrilled to see that she was doing an online school which has been a godsend during these unsettling difficult times for us all.
I love that her tutorials which are such fun and full of advice and tips for everyone. ( I love when the pups make an appearance or Jean gets the giggles)
It’s great how you can click on to older tutorials and watch as many times as you want/ need. There is a huge range of subjects!
I also love the forum and seeing everyone’s paintings, all at such different levels but the school family are very encouraging with their comments as is Jean. My paintings are quite basic as I’m struggling a bit but I feel happy to post, as I know I love seeing everyone’s paintings no matter what stage they are in their personal journey and hopefully it will encourage more of the beginners to share their work too.
So thank you Jean for creating your wonderful online school it is amazing
I have been painting for a little over 10 years. I always wanted to learn how to paint with watercolor but thought you had to be able to draw before you could paint. A friend of mine at work had taken a class so she brought her supplies and she would help me during our lunch hour. She also shared that you didn’t need to be able to draw, that you could use a light box or graphite paper. I was so happy and sold on watercolor. I just knew I would never be able to draw on my own but thanks to you I’m learning. It does make you feel complete as an artist that you can complete the whole process!
Also, this couldn’t have come at a more perfect time with all the craziness going on in the world. It gives me something to look forward to while having to stay in so much. It has been a life saver! Thank you for sharing yourself with us. You are an amazing artist!
